The Linyanti Concession: Why Botswana’s Private Frontier is the Ultimate Safari Secret

The Linyanti Concession: Why Botswana’s Private Frontier is the Ultimate Safari Secret

In the remote northern reaches of Botswana, tucked between the famous Okavango Delta and the iconic Chobe National Park, lies a wilderness that feels like one of southern Africa’s best-kept secrets. The Linyanti Concession is a 1250 square kilometre private reserve where time seems to slow down, and the rhythm of the wild takes over.

For those who prefer a less crowded and more intimate safari experience, Linyanti offers a refreshing sense of that storybook “old Africa” feeling. A place of untamed floodplains, ancient mopane forests, and a silence broken only by the trumpeting of an elephant or the distant roar of a lion. Here are seven reasons why this exclusive concession is worth a visit.

1. Land of the Giants

One thing Linyanti is famously known for is its high density of elephants. During the dry winter months (June to October), thousands of these grey giants migrate from the parched interior of the Chobe to the permanent waters of the Linyanti River. Witnessing a breeding herd of several hundred elephants crossing a lagoon, their trunks acting as snorkels while calves splash excitedly, is a quintessential Linyanti experience.

2. A Predator’s Playground

Linyanti has earned a strong reputation among safari experts for its high density of predators. The diverse terrain creates the perfect hunting ground for lions, leopards, and cheetahs. It’s also one of the best places in southern Africa to see the endangered African Wild Dog. These “painted wolves” thrive in the concession’s remote corners, and watching a pack coordinate a hunt is a masterclass in nature’s raw efficiency.

3. Exclusivity is the New Luxury

Unlike the public areas of Chobe National Park, the Linyanti is a private concession. This means that the number of visitors is strictly limited to those staying in its handful of luxury camps. You won’t find yourself in a queue to catch the perfect glimpse at a leopard sighting here. Instead, you’ll often find that you might be the only vehicle for miles, allowing for a deep, uninterrupted connection with the landscape.

4. The Mystery of the Savuti Channel

Running through the heart of the concession is the legendary Savuti Channel. This mysterious waterway has a history of drying up and flowing again without warning, often decades apart. One can either expect a lush ribbon of green or a dry, dusty valley. Exploring the “sunken forests” of dead leadwood trees, created from remnants of a time when the channel was dry, offers a hauntingly beautiful backdrop for photography.

5. Adventures Beyond the Vehicle

One of the greatest perks of a private concession is the freedom of movement and variety of activities. A safari in Linyanti means that you aren’t limited to just daytime drives. You can also head out on night drives to spot elusive nocturnal creatures like honey badgers and civets, or lace up your boots for a guided walking safari if you’re looking for something slightly more immersive.

Stepping out of the 4×4 allows you to notice the “small five”, such as the Elephant Shrew, Ant Lion, Rhinoceros Beetle, Buffalo Weaver, and Leopard Tortoise. You may even see the intricate tracks in the sand and learn about the medicinal uses of the jackalberry trees, things that you might otherwise miss in the vehicle.

6. A Watery Wonderland

While the Okavango Delta is famous for its mokoro (dugout canoe) trips, Linyanti offers its own take on water-based exploration. Floating along the Linyanti River or the lagoons of the Selinda Spillway allows you to have a front-row seat to the lives of hippos and crocodiles. To top it off, the birdlife here is also spectacular, with over 400 recorded species, including the rare Pel’s Fishing Owl and the vibrant Carmine Bee-eater. It is a true birder’s paradise.

7. The Zebra Migration

While the Great Migration is widely associated with East Africa, Botswana has its own spectacular version of this movement. During the green season (November to March), thousands of zebras travel through the Linyanti toward the marshes of Savuti. It’s a time of renewal, as the dry plains transform into a vibrant emerald carpet, and newborn foals take their first shaky steps under the watchful eyes of the region’s apex predators. This allows you to witness the wild in its most raw and vulnerable state.

A Frontier Worth Finding

The Linyanti Concession is a destination that provides a feeling of profound isolation and discovery. It bridges the gap between the lush waterways of the Delta and the rugged woodlands of the Chobe, offering visitors a “best of both worlds” experience. Whether you’re watching a sunset turn the Linyanti River into liquid gold or listening to the heartbeat of the bush from the deck of a luxury tent, this is Botswana at its most authentic. If you’re searching for the call of the wild, you’ll find it here!
